Starting High School‌ • Kennedy Bowes

The whole idea of it makes me feel

like I’m in a soccer game

something like making a goal

or the feeling I get from winning

a relief of the psyche

a change of the soul.

You tell me it is too early to be looking back,

but that is because you have forgotten

the perfect time

and the beautiful memory

But I can lie in my bed and remember every detail.

At 4 I was a ballerina.

I could make myself spin and dance

by moving a certain way.

At 7 I was a princess,

at 10 a tom boy.

But now I am mostly looking out the window

watching the night sky

Back then it never seemed so bright

and the moon never glowed

as it does today, all the light shining through it.

This is the beginning of a new life, I say to myself,

as I walk through the past in my memories.

It is time to take things seriously,

time to gain knowledge.

It seems only yesterday I used to believe

that school wasn’t that important

If you told me, it wouldn’t matter.

But now when I look at the future,

I am proud.

I am happy of what I have accomplished.
